About ABC Nato

ABC Nato is a free NATO phonetic alphabet translator and reference tool built by Juan Mediavilla. It turns text into code words such as Alfa, Bravo, and Charlie, and can display matching signal flags and Morse code.

Why I built it

I wanted a translator that was quick enough to use during a conversation. Many existing tools and respources online didn't work the way I wanted so I built this site and over time started to add more features like the morse code and flags.

I hope this helps people spell names and identifiers clearly, practice the alphabet, and explore the relationship between spoken code words, flags, and Morse signals.

How the translator works

Translation happens in your browser as you type. The text you enter is mapped to the International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet and is not stored by ABC Nato as part of normal use. Optional controls reveal the signal flag and Morse code for each letter, while playback lets you hear the Morse timing.

The site also supports shareable query URLs. A link can open the translator with text already filled in while its canonical URL remains the homepage, keeping shared examples useful without creating duplicate search pages.

Sources and accuracy

The reference material follows the official alphabet used by NATO and ICAO. The official spelling for A is Alfa, not the English word Alpha. ICAO explains that this spelling helps speakers of languages where ph is not automatically pronounced like f. You can read the ICAO history of the spelling alphabet and NATO's phonetic alphabet, codes and signals reference.
